Insight 1 of 2

Rival live-TV presence fell after DIRECTV cancellation

Share of 2,367 established U.S. panelists with a Fubo, Sling TV, Philo, or YouTube TV receipt in the 180 days before and after a 2025 DIRECTV cancellation

Source: YipitData U.S. e-receipt panel. All cancelers had complete 180-day windows; 97.7% remained observable after cancellation. YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and cable substitutes are undercaptured, so switching rates are floors.

How many DIRECTV cancelers newly appeared at a rival live-TV streamer?

Only 6.8%, or 161 panelists, had a rival live-TV receipt after cancellation but not before it. Another 75.2%, or 1,781 panelists, had no observed rival in either window. Because 97.7% remained observable in the panel after cancellation, the missing rival receipts were not primarily caused by panel attrition.

Did on-demand streaming fall after DIRECTV cancellation?

No. The share with Netflix, Disney+, Peacock, Paramount+, or Max rose from 41.8% before cancellation to 43.8% after it. The pattern shows that observed on-demand subscriptions remained present even as tracked rival live-TV activity declined.

Assumptions & Methodologies

We analyzed our U.S. e-receipt panel through August 2026. Cancelers were 2,367 established, still-observed panelists with a first DIRECTV cancellation in 2025 and complete 180-day windows. Retained customers were 3,382 panelists with payments into 2026 and no 2025 cancellation, anchored to their first 2025 receipt. Rival live TV included Fubo, Sling TV, Philo, and named YouTube TV receipts. On-demand streaming included Netflix, Disney+, Peacock, Paramount+, and Max. YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and cable substitutes are undercaptured. Results are associations, not causal estimates.
