Chart data
| Series | Share choosing a rival refillable-tank printer |
|---|---|
| HP cartridge buyers | 11.1% |
| HP Instant Ink subscribers | 10.7% |
How often did each HP cohort buy another printer?
Instant Ink subscribers bought any next printer at 11.6%, compared with 19.4% of HP cartridge buyers. That gap is an observed association: Instant Ink subscribers may have owned newer printers, so the analysis does not establish that subscription caused less re-shopping.
Which rival refillable-tank printer brand captured most observed replacements?
Epson EcoTank accounted for 77% of rival refillable-tank printer replacements among Instant Ink subscribers and 78% among HP cartridge buyers. The remaining tracked set was Canon MegaTank or PIXMA G and Brother InkVestment.
Assumptions & Methodologies
We analyzed YipitData’s U.S. e-receipt panel. The 2024 groups were 12,249 established households with an Instant Ink receipt and 14,657 that bought HP ink or toner without an Instant Ink signal; households with a tracked tank printer were excluded. Outcomes covered January 1, 2025–August 18, 2026. A replacement was an observed HP printer or tracked rival refillable-tank purchase. Receipt-template coverage makes absolute rates floors, and Instant Ink signals determined only 2024 group membership. The panel skews slightly male and upper-middle income. Results do not prove subscription caused less printer shopping or that a tank purchase permanently displaced HP.
