How did the TurboTax cohort compare?

Among 81,352 paneled TurboTax filers from 2025, 50.1% refiled with TurboTax in 2026, 5.0% used a tracked competitor, and 44.8% had no observed paid-preparer receipt. Both cohorts were measured with the same panel and filing-season windows.

How much direct switching occurred between H&R Block and TurboTax?

H&R Block sent 459 observed filers to TurboTax, or 3.1% of its 2025 cohort. TurboTax sent 1,029 filers to H&R Block, or 1.3% of its larger cohort. The rates and counts answer different questions, but both show that direct switching was smaller than the no-observed-preparer group.

Assumptions & Methodologies

We analyzed established U.S. e-receipt panelists observed in both filing seasons. The 2025 and 2026 seasons ran January 1–April 30. H&R Block used its merchant label; TurboTax used Intuit receipts containing “TurboTax.” Refiling required the same provider in 2026, switching required a tracked competitor, and no observed preparer meant neither. Free tiers, IRS Direct File, paper filing, and non-filing may produce no receipt, so that group is an upper bound on leaving paid preparation. The panel skews toward online DIY filing, and results are not audited market totals.
