Did churners already hold rival plans more often than retained subscribers?
No. Before the churn window, 17.4% of PlayStation Plus churners already held Xbox Game Pass or Nintendo Switch Online, compared with 19.6% of retained subscribers. Retained subscribers were therefore slightly more likely than churners to already have a rival plan. This comparison is observational and does not establish causality.
Assumptions & Methodologies
We analyzed our U.S. e-receipt panel using 2024 to establish PlayStation Plus and rival-plan status, H1 2025 for PlayStation Plus churn, and H2 2025 for new rival adoption. The comparison covered 4,053 churners and 13,373 retained subscribers with no 2024 Xbox Game Pass or Nintendo Switch Online signal. Churn required an explicit cancellation or expiration email. Panelists were observable before 2024 and active in the trailing 30 days. Rival subscriptions billed to unlinked emails may be missed. The comparison is observational and excludes PC, cloud, and mobile gaming.
