Was the difference specific to paid AI subscriptions?

Any paid AI appeared among 50.9% of retained Quizlet subscribers and 36.6% of cancelers. By comparison, Netflix or Spotify appeared among 45.3% of retained subscribers and 43.5% of cancelers. The near-flat streaming comparison suggests the ChatGPT gap was not simply a tendency for retained subscribers to hold more subscriptions of every kind.

Did earlier paid AI adoption predict later Quizlet retention?

No retention advantage appeared in the sequential check. Among Quizlet subscribers active in the first half of 2025, 35.6% of 163 people who had paid AI by the end of 2024 remained active in 2026, compared with 38.1% of 431 people without earlier paid AI. The same-period difference describes who was still paying Quizlet; it does not show that paid AI improved retention.

Assumptions & Methodologies

We analyzed YipitData’s U.S. e-receipt panel from January 2024–August 2026. Quizlet was identified in Apple and Google receipt text. Established subscribers first appeared by June 2025 and were on-panel before 2024. Retained subscribers had Quizlet payment activity in 2026; cancelers had an explicit Quizlet cancellation email. ChatGPT meant an observed OpenAI payment. Paid AI also included Anthropic and Perplexity; the streaming comparison included Netflix and Spotify. Cancellation messages are sparse, app-store receipts may omit plan details, and the analysis shows association rather than whether AI affected retention.
