Did Waymo adopters reduce Uber trips faster than non-adopters?
No. Uber trips fell 13.8% among standalone Waymo adopters and 13.2% among same-market established Uber riders who never rode Waymo. The near-identical declines do not show a Waymo-specific drop in Uber use, while adopters’ total rideshare trips rose 11.0%.
How representative were the standalone Waymo adopters?
They were unusually heavy Uber riders. The 268 adopters averaged 18.6 Uber trips in Jan.–Jun. 2025, 72% above the non-adopter baseline. The finding therefore describes early adopters in three Waymo markets and may not extend to later or more typical robotaxi users.
Assumptions & Methodologies
We analyzed YipitData’s U.S. e-receipt panel for completed rides among established Uber riders in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Phoenix. The adopter cohort first used standalone Waymo in Jul.–Dec. 2025; controls never used Waymo. We compared Jan.–Jun. 2025 with Jan.–Jun. 2026 and excluded the adoption period. Counts combine Uber, Lyft, and standalone Waymo rides and exclude delivery, memberships, refunds, cancellations, and Waymo rides billed by Uber. Adopters self-selected and were unusually heavy riders; e-receipt and email-level identity limits apply. Results are associations, not causal estimates.
