Was the overlap specific to Monarch Money?
Mostly. Any tracked paid budgeting competitor appeared for 12.2% of YNAB app-store subscribers, compared with 1.0% of other app-store subscribers. Monarch Money accounted for 193 of the YNAB overlaps; Rocket Money appeared for 0.31% and Empower for 0.16%. The comparison is limited to app-store receipt visibility.
How did YNAB plan type differ for Monarch Money co-subscribers?
Among the 193 YNAB–Monarch Money co-subscribers, 47.2% had only a monthly YNAB plan and 47.2% had an annual plan. Among YNAB-only subscribers, 40.8% were monthly-only and 52.6% had an annual plan. These modest differences describe observed plan mix; they do not show that Monarch Money caused a plan choice or predicts cancellation.
Did Monarch Money usually appear after YNAB?
Within the two-year observation window, Monarch Money’s first receipt appeared after YNAB’s for 92 co-subscribers and before YNAB’s for 66; another 35 first appeared at the window boundary. These are first observed receipts, not true adoption dates, so the counts are directional and do not establish switching or replacement.
Assumptions & Methodologies
We analyzed our U.S. e-receipt panel from August 2024 through July 2026. YNAB subscribers had an Apple or Google subscription receipt naming YNAB or You Need A Budget; the Lumy companion app was excluded. The benchmark consisted of other app-store subscribers with the same receipt visibility. Monarch Money was identified from its named subscription line item. Direct web billing is undercaptured for both services, and the co-subscriber cell is modest. Overlap within one window does not establish simultaneous use, adoption order, substitution, retention risk, or causality.
