Was the result driven by app-store-billed Avira subscribers?

No. Among 252 direct-billed Avira subscribers, 23.8% also paid a competing antivirus, still above McAfee’s 14.2% and Norton’s 15.2%. The 101-person app-store Avira subgroup reached 33.7%. The direct-billed result makes the comparison less dependent on app-store subscribers’ broader tendency to stack subscriptions.

Does co-payment show which antivirus a subscriber considered primary?

No. The 24-month measure shows that two providers appeared in the same wallet, but not whether the subscriptions were active simultaneously, which one came first, or which product the subscriber used. It establishes that competing-antivirus payment was more common among Avira subscribers, not that Avira was the secondary product or that overlap caused later churn.

Assumptions & Methodologies

We analyzed YipitData’s U.S. e-receipt panel over the trailing 24 months through mid-August 2026. Avira was identified in direct-processor, Apple, and Google receipt text after excluding look-alike terms. The Avira group contained 346 established active panelists; McAfee and Norton benchmarks contained 36,671 and 33,226. Competing antivirus included McAfee, Norton, Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, and Malwarebytes, excluding each group’s own brand. Co-payment required at least one qualifying receipt in the shared window. The measure does not establish simultaneous use, sequence, substitution, or causality, and Avira’s sample is modest.
