How many Chess.com cancelers dropped another app nearby?

Within 30 days before or after canceling Chess.com, 51.9% of the 158-member cohort canceled at least one other Google Play subscription, averaging 1.30 other apps. In a comparison window five to seven months earlier, 38.6% of the same members canceled another app, averaging 0.76. Among 260 retained members, 43.1% canceled another app in the same 60-day comparison window.

Did the cancellations concentrate on one other app?

No single co-canceled app appeared among more than ~4% of Chess.com cancelers, or seven of 158 people. The observed cancellations spanned video, music, platform bundles, learning, wellness, gaming, and utility apps. This diffuse pattern does not identify a chess competitor or establish why members canceled several subscriptions together.

Assumptions & Methodologies

We analyzed YipitData’s U.S. e-receipt panel. Chess.com members were identified through Google Play receipts naming Chess - Play & Learn. The canceler cohort contained 158 active panelists with a first cancellation email in 2025; 260 retained members had a 2025 active receipt and no cancellation through mid-2026. Other-app cancellations were app-named Google Play cancellation emails. The comparison used 30-day event windows, the same members’ matched window five to seven months earlier, and retained members. Apple and direct billing are under-observed, cohorts are modest, and cancellation signals may represent auto-renewal ending rather than permanent loss.
