How many rival documentary services did MagellanTV subscribers pay for?
Among MagellanTV subscribers, 40.3% paid for at least two tracked rival documentary services, compared with 1.8% of other major-streaming subscribers. MagellanTV subscribers averaged 1.53 tracked rivals, versus 0.12 for the comparison group. These concurrent receipts show multiple paid services in the measured window, not how often subscribers watched them.
Did CuriosityStream or MagellanTV appear first?
Among 249 MagellanTV and CuriosityStream subscribers whose first receipt dates could be ordered, CuriosityStream appeared first for 163, or 65%, while MagellanTV appeared first for 86, or 35%. The sequence is directional because first-observed dates can miss earlier activity; it does not show that either service caused a subscriber to add or cancel the other.
Assumptions & Methodologies
We analyzed YipitData’s U.S. e-receipt panel for 24 months through August 17, 2026. The cohort included 767 panelists with a MagellanTV subscription receipt. The comparison group was a 2% sample of 18,046 panelists with a major streaming-service receipt in the same window, excluding MagellanTV subscribers. Rival documentary services were CuriosityStream, Discovery+, History Vault, Wondrium or Great Courses, BritBox, Acorn TV, Nebula, and MUBI. App-store receipts can be missing, free viewing and ad-supported channels are not measured, and subscribers with more visible emailed receipts may show more services. Results describe panel-observed paid overlap rather than total-market penetration, viewing, cancellation, or causation.
