Was the renewal difference only a sign of paying for more creative tools?
Not entirely. Subscribers who paid for generative AI but not Canva had 27.9% observed renewal, compared with 25.3% for Canva-only subscribers and 21.2% for those with neither. Each of these groups contained at least 300 subscribers. The comparison reduces, but does not eliminate, the possibility that more engaged creators simply produce more observable receipts.
How common did paid generative AI become among PicsArt subscribers?
The share with a paid generative-AI receipt rose from 7.2% in the first half of 2023 to 27.0% in the first half of 2026. The measured set included ChatGPT or OpenAI, Claude or Anthropic, Perplexity, and Midjourney; Gemini and Adobe were excluded because their billing labels were not specific enough.
Assumptions & Methodologies
We analyzed 2,575 established U.S. e-receipt panelists with an annual PicsArt app-store receipt in the second half of 2024. Observed renewal required another annual PicsArt receipt 300–430 days later. Generative-AI payment required a ChatGPT or OpenAI, Claude or Anthropic, Perplexity, or Midjourney receipt during the paid term. Annual receipt capture is incomplete, so rates are comparative floors. Canva served as a separate paid-tool comparison. Connected-inbox breadth and creator engagement can raise detection of both outside subscriptions and renewal, so the result is an association rather than evidence that paid AI caused retention.
